Reclaimed Bangkirai (Yellow Balau)
Shorea laevis, a dense Kalimantan hardwood. Reclaimed Bangkirai is our reference for outdoor decking, pergolas, cladding and exterior structures.

The species
Bangkirai (also called Yellow Balau) is a tropical hardwood native to Kalimantan. Our data sheet describes the heartwood as brownish yellow and the grain as straight or interlocked. In our reclaimed stock, tones typically range from reddish-brown to brown, with lighter or darker areas, mineral streaks and natural markings.
It is dense and hard, yet not especially difficult to work with hardened-tip tools; holes should be drilled before nailing to prevent splitting. It is difficult to dry and to treat, which is one reason we favour naturally air-dried reclaimed boards when available. Moisture content may vary from piece to piece and cannot be fully standardised.
